Ruger LCP
If you haven’t looked at the Ruger LCP for CCW, you are missing a great pistol. Our retail arm, Mossy Creek Arms, has been selling the LCP’s as fast as we can get them in. In fact, I met a customer at the shop this weekend to complete the sale of a used Glock 19. But when he saw the LCP he quickly changed his mind. The LCP has several upsides. First, it is in .380 caliber and not .32. That small change makes it better for CCW. Second, the LCP is so light that you will easily be able to carry it all day without radically...

I have two children that are very curious about everything dad does in the shop. They ask a lot of questions about the guns that come through here. For years I have had a shop safe, but nothing in the house. The kids were too small to climb, so our home defense firearms stayed on top of furniture or on the top shelf in the closet. Now that they are older, we decided that there needed to be something to protect the kids from themselves. They are good kids, but I don’t trust them not to snoop around since I did that all the time...
read moreS&W J-Frame Big Dot
I recently had the opportunity to put a Big Dot on a S&W J-Frame. Same sight as the Ruger SP101, and same process for installation. Your gun is a candidate if it is a newer J-Frame with the pinned front sight, otherwise the gun would have to milled to accept it, and blued refinished. Probably not feasible if you don’t have the pinned sight. At 25 yards it was no trouble for me to hit pie plates at our local range. The sight sits very well on the gun and makes it point more naturally for me. I always feel like I am dipping the...

Many people think that putting a gun in a gun case is a great way to offer protection to the gun. This is certainly true traveling to and from the range where the gun’s finish might get dinged or scratched while driving. What most people don’t know is that long term storage in a gun case will eventually cause your gun to rust. The cloth that most cases are made from is actually a moisture attractant. It will grab moisture from the air and cause the gun to oxodize while it is stored. This week I gave out some advice to a...

I recently returned from a trip to Ukraine that has become an annual event. Each year that I have been, Woolrich has sent me a piece of gear to take on the trip for review. This year, they sent their Elite Series Fleece Jacket. I need to start by saying that this is my favorite piece of Woolrich gear that I own. I have been privileged to own many pieces of their gear in years past, and for the last 2 years I have reviewed their products. Many of you are already familiar with Woolrich’s quality and their functionality. This jacket...
read morePaddle Holsters?
I have worn paddle holsters for years in various configurations of Kydex and leather. Most of the time it was one of the inexpensive versions from Uncle Mike’s for IDPA. They are great for the person who lives in civilian life where there are places that the firearm is not allowed. Need to go to the post office? Take of the holster and leave it in the car. They are very easy to get on and off once you get the hang of it. The thing I noticed the other day was how uncomfortable they are. I was driving around enjoying Christmas...

read moreThe Complexity of CCW
One of the things that I get asked every week is how to choose the right handgun for someone. If that person is simply going to keep the gun at home for personal defense the answer is easier to discover. However, if they plan on carrying the gun for CCW or off duty work the answer isn’t as simple. It’s kind of like asking what clothes you need to buy this year. Obviously for off duty carry the main goal is to have a firearm available if you need one. This has led many to buy very clever little guns. These do fulfill this...

I have been around lasers for many years now as an LEO and gunsmith. I have used them personally, and feel like they give you a distinct advantage in certain situations. I was however, new to the green lasers put out by Viridian. They are simply awesome. The green laser is incredibly easy to see in day or night conditions. Jim at Mossy Creek Arms has several of these in stock including the C5L which is an incredible laser light combo featuring the green laser and a 100 lumen light. It is compact and will fit virtually any handgun with a...

I just returned from Ukraine this week after being there for a conference with some people from my church. We had a great time with our friends over there. Much like last time, I took some gear that Woolrich was kind enough to supply for testing. Be watching for the review soon. We continue to be busy with SP101 stuff right now as well a the usual swing into the SM-1 shotgun package. The newest thing we have been working is an SM-2 package that is really cool for the 870 using a pistol grip. Be looking for a video on that one really...
