The hardest shot to make with a pistol is the one you have to make under pressure. Most of us shoot for fun, but carry for serious purposes. It’s not unusual to see guys at the range shooting cans, clays or other targets as they laugh with their friends. Shooting, by its very nature, is fun.
The problem comes in that we never practice like we mean it. How many people have told me what a great shot they are until we went to an IDPA match. When the timer went off and people were watching it got serious; seriously ugly.
Next time you are enjoying the shooting sports, put some effort into mentally concentrating for a portion of your practice. It should be serious because lives are depending on it, maybe even your own. After you have gone through some drills, pull out those cans and blast away. Who says you can’t mix business with pleasure?
I’ve heard it said that “when the buzzer goes off, you go stupid”. Pressure makes us do strange and unexpected things.
