What is the best 1911? This is a question that is debated a lot, and if you are considering a 1911, I want to help you make a wise choice. The best 1911’s I’ve ever seen are from Sams Custom Gunworks, but if you don’t want to spend $1500 + and wait a year you will have to choose between several production guns.
Most of you are familiar with Springfield Armory and Kimber pistols, so I will limit my discussion to these two brands. I personally have a problem called coltitus. I seem to have a sick fascination with Colt products even though they refuse to bring their quality and options up to the new standards that have been set by companies like Kimber and Springfield, and it seems like in today’s market they are the two clear leaders in production 1911’s.
If you were to ask me today, I would without reservation push you towards Springfield. They seem to be making some great pistols that are economical, and the most important thing is that their pistols run. I have had a lot of shooters through the years purchase the Springfields without any complaints. You simply don’t see the jam issues that several 1911 makers have.
I have had several experiences with Kimbers that jammed as a day of training or competition wore on, and I have seen one that almost ended a man’s class when his pistol would not shoot through a magazine without jamming. No doubt Kimber makes some of the best looking pistols around, but for the money and reliability out of the box you can’t beat the Springfields as an overall package. The decision really comes down to whether or not you want to put extra money in your gun. If that isn’t a factor you might look at the Kimber, but be cautioned, just because they cost more doesn’t mean you are getting a better product.
If you are putting $1200 in a 1911, you should think about saving a little more for a custom pistol that will be rock solid reliable and accurate. Otherwise, look to the Springfield line of pistols, and I think you will be pleased.
I’m one of the shooters Jeff steered towards Springfield 1911s. I called MCC looking for a Kimber and he pointed me towards SA. I managed to find one (MCC tried everything possible but just couldn’t get the one I wanted) and absolutely love it.
I would recommend SA 1911s to anyone. I’ve thanked Jeff several times for pointing me towards SA but I’ll do it again: Thanks Jeff!

That was a great buy for you. Not only did you save a pile of cash, you ended up with a solid gun.

Springfield will be the better quality with more bells and whistles. If it was me, I would probably buy the colt because I am afflicted with a strange disease that takes reason and logic when it comes to Colt and throws it out the window. No question though the Springfield is going to better finished and more reliable.

Is “Glock-itis” a side effect of your disease?
Springfield will be the best bang for the buck — but its hard to pass up a good Colt. Why are you buying a 1911? If its to shoot and carry, I’d go for the SA. I’d go with the Colt if you are more of a collector.
I personally bought a SA because I have an older Colt 1911. The older Colt is more of a safe queen these days but I got the SA to shoot and carry. I am extremely happy with both.
No the Glock-itis is a well informed opinion about the best handgun on the market, but more about that later. Bubba is giving great advice Brad. You should consider his point.

I’m looking to buy this one to shoot and keep in the truck… at least until that’s made illegal. ;-( SA looks like the route I’ll be going.
At some point I would like to get a Colt so I can try to make everybody drool like Jeff does with his nickel-plated prize piece. 😉

Good call. I think you will be satisfied. Get yourself protected and then go about collecting.
As a Kimber 45 1911 owner, I have had a great experience with my Kimber. As far as reliability, MCC knows that my Kimber will fire any round that we have put in it – box or handloaded, round ball to semi-wadcutter as well as hallowpoint self defense loads.
The only thing I have to do with my Kimber is keep it clean. 150 rounds is where you can feel it start to gunk up and you risk some jamming problems. It then needs a field cleaning and some oil. Yet, this is not abnormal for a good 1911 – A good snug fit means low tolerance for dirt.

Tom,
Good comment and I am glad the wreck didn’t turn you into an anti-gunner! I definitely have seen and shot the gun our celebrity friend talks about, and his comment is exactly what I was trying to say. His gun is beautiful (Eclipse Model), but as he points out it starts to slow down. You won’t find that you have to apply so much TLC to your Springfield, and if you bought a SAMS Custom it is rock solid tight and won’t jam even after shooting high volumes.
I have a kimber .45 Custom Target II. I have fired 400 rounds through it and never had a jam. It fires like a dream and is the most accurate pistol I have ever laid my hands on. I have only taken the gun apart once and that was when I first bought it. I have only oiled the gun and wiped it down but haven’t done a full cleaning yet. In my opinion, you can’t get a better 45 for the price. $900. By the way, is that the real Tom Cruise? If it is, I am very impressed that he fires a Kimber .45 and is an avid shooter. It rather makes me like him all the more.
Dan,
Thanks for your comment. I am glad that you are having good luck with your Kimber, and I hope it continues. We can only speak from our opinion of seeing many different guns come through our shop, and we just don’t seem to get the reliability from Kimber that you get from Springfield. Kimber makes some great looking guns, and I am sure that some of them are problem free, but any equivalent model in the Springfield line is cheaper and generally more reliable.
Unfortunately that is not the real Tom Cruise. A friend of ours who looks like the famous actor signed in this way while taking pain medicine after his car was hit. I liked what he had to say about his Kimber and didn’t want to delete the post since I knew it was him. Sorry to disappoint, but anyone that uses our VIP service stays anonymous.

I couldn’t agree with you more about “Coltitus” being a sick fascination with a company that refuses to joing the 21st century, I to share the affliction.
However I couldn’t disagree with you more about Kimber and S.A., I shoot my Colts along side Kimbers and S.A.s on a regular basis and Kimbers run like the proverbial Swiss watch compared to both the low and high end S.A.’s. I’ve seen S.A. custom shop guns worth thousands with the same quality and function problems as their cheap imported entry level guns.
